School in Pioneerpark: Hanau sets new standards for education!
The “School in Pioneer Park” in Hanau ceremoniously opened its doors today, June 16, 2025. Mayor Dr. At the opening, Maximilian Bieri spoke of a historic moment for the city, as this school is the first new primary school run by the city in 50 years. With space for up to 300 students, it is located in the Pioneer Park residential area of the same name and represents an important milestone in the educational landscape. The construction was carried out by the city's own company Hanau Immobilien- und Baumanagement (IBM) and construction work started in November 2021, with actual school operations beginning in the 2024/2025 school year. This development was also documented by Presse-Service.de.
The building, designed by Behnisch Architects, meets high ecological standards and is designed for sustainability and modernity. The school offers a climate-neutral energy supply, extensive green roofs and a photovoltaic system with an output of 73 kWp. Its barrier-free design includes a modern spatial concept with open learning areas, which includes full digital equipment and thus enables innovative teaching methods. The city of Hanau invested around 17.5 million euros in the construction of the school, the gymnasium and the outdoor facilities, with around 1.6 million euros coming from KfW funding. The material equipment costs amount to around 971,000 euros.
Special features of the school
The three-story school will be equipped with several classrooms and a differentiation room, with interior design being prioritized during construction work. Special features include the spacious entrance with light colors and modern, height-adjustable furniture that takes the different needs of the students into account. The planning also envisages the use of the school gymnasium as a temporary exercise area, as the outdoor facilities, which deal with the theme of “forest” with play and exercise areas, are still under construction and are expected to be completed by July 2024.
It is not new that colorful and appealing learning environments are important for education. The Montag Foundations have been committed to innovative school building concepts for over 10 years and want to ensure that these buildings promote contemporary education for everyone. Their materials emphasize the importance of well-thought-out pedagogical architecture.
Future and outlook
The city of Hanau has big plans for the coming years. In total, there will be investments of over 150 million euros in new buildings and expansions by 2029. Extensive renovation measures are currently being carried out on existing schools every day, costing between 3 and 4 million euros annually. Mayor Dr. Bieri is optimistic and highlights the progress in construction and future completions. The “School in Pioneer Park” is a significant step in the right direction for the urban educational landscape.
After the challenges caused by unforeseen problems and necessary improvement work, teachers, parents and, above all, the children are looking forward to moving into their new school. Here in Pioneer Park, education is not only taught, but also lived.
