Incredible! Hanau couple sells 80s emerald ring for 2300 euros
In a current episode of the popular show “Cash for Rares”, a couple from Hanau presented a very special emerald ring. The ring dates from the 80s and was purchased in 1982 for an impressive 24,056 D-Marks, or around 12,000 euros. Not only were the sellers Regine Platt and Rainer Kasan surprised by this price, but also the jewelry expert Heide Rezepa-Zabel and the presenter Horst Lichter, who looked at the history of the ring with astonishment. The two wanted to sell the piece of jewelry on behalf of a friend and were hoping for a price of around a quarter of the original purchase price.
Not only is the ring a classic piece, it features an impressive 2.8 carat square diamond and a 18k gold setting. However, the expertise showed that the actual total value of the ring is only between 1,800 and 2,000 euros. Susanne Steiger, one of the dealers, showed interest and asked for the details of the evaluation. Finally, Daniel Meyer started the bidding round with a starting price of 1,000 euros, and the auction ended with Steiger winning the bid for 2,300 euros. The couple were happy with this, despite the fact that the expertise was only a sixth of the original purchase price. “It’s just fun to sell jewelry like this,” said the couple.
Appreciation and evaluation of jewelry
The value of jewelry depends on many factors. According to information on Souvero, it's not just the quality of materials that matters - such as precious metals and gemstones - but also the design, brand and history of the piece. The quality of the diamonds in the ring is also crucial: they have good clarity and cut, which is very popular in the jewelry world.
According to the 4Cs - carat, color, clarity, cut - the value of jewelry can vary significantly. A higher carat value and better purity increase the value, while the brand plays an additional role. Pieces from renowned manufacturers often fetch higher prices. In this context, the emerald ring was valued at an estimated value of 1,000 to 1,200 euros and was ultimately sold for 2,300 euros. This shows once again that the emotional value and provenance of a piece can also be crucial, especially for private sellers.
Factors such as the condition of the piece of jewelry and complete documentation of the history are also important for the evaluation. In order to obtain a fair assessment and secure the value in the long term, a professional jewelry valuation is essential. This applies not only to sales, but also to insurance in the event of damage or fair distribution as part of estate planning.
Incidentally, the couple from Hanau are not the first group from the Main-Kinzig district to appear in “Bares für Rares”. It remains exciting to see what treasures future guests will present.
