Tornado hotspot North Hesse: Two cases and increasing danger!

In the last few weeks, the weather in Germany has really developed into a tornado main stage. Northern Hesse was hit particularly badly. According to current information from the German Weather Service (DWD), two tornadoes have already been recorded in the region this year, making the place one of the most active tornado hotspots in the country. On May 3rd, two tornadoes were spotted in Biebertal and the Werra-Meißner district, both with a strength of IF1.5 and wind speeds of around 180 km/h. Another tornado on May 28th over Hessisch Lichtenau also left its mark by damaging a mobile home and several trees, reports fr.de.

The DWD draws a consistently positive but also worrying conclusion: With a total of 13 confirmed tornadoes in Germany, 5 of them in Hesse alone, the 2025 tornado season could definitely make even bigger waves. Meteorologists are already talking about the most active tornado phase in years. Detailed data on tornado events is collected in the European severe weather database and the Germany tornado list. The reports show a clear increasing trend in tornado formation in the last two weeks, such as DWD website explained.

Tornado Activity Overview

  • Erster bestätigter Tornado am 30. März in Uenze, Brandenburg (IF1, ~150 km/h)
  • Am 2. Mai: schwacher Tornado in Oppenwehe

The situation is exciting in that the DWD assumes that the number of tornadoes could probably increase further in 2025. August or September could become another hotspot for tornadoes, not least due to the dynamic weather conditions that have made many tornado reports possible in recent weeks. Waterspouts on the North and Baltic Seas are also being discussed wetterdienst.de reported.

While the current tornado season is struggling, meteorologists' conclusions suggest that most of the season is still ahead. The effects of the tornadoes are clearly visible: from forest damage to slightly damaged roofs, the devastation affects the affected areas. They show once again that natural forces are unpredictable and can pose a great challenge.

So it remains to be seen what surprises the weather situation has in store for the summer. According to the experts, the probability of tornadoes is far from over, as the average number of 49 tornadoes per year in Germany has not yet been reached. As we look ahead to the coming months, one can only hope that everyone will remain safe.
