Bruno is looking for a loving home: the big diamond in the rough!

Dogs are often more than just pets - they are loyal companions and often protectors of their people. A particularly impressive breed are the herd protection dogs, which stand out for their independent nature and their ability to protect herds from a wide variety of threats. This dog breed has been valued for around 2000 years and has a long tradition in many countries, including Italy, Portugal and Turkey. These dogs are significantly larger than other breeds, often over 60cm tall, and require plenty of space and a secure, fenced area for free movement.

But what happens when these wonderful animals get into trouble? Here comes the organization Herd Protection Dogs in Need e.V. into the game. Their goal is to rescue, care for and place livestock guard dogs in dangerous situations in responsible hands. This organization values dogs' loyalty, intelligence and independence, but also works hard to raise awareness of the challenges and needs of this breed.

Bruno is waiting at the animal shelter

One of the animals in need is Bruno, a livestock guard dog who has been waiting for a new home since October 2023. Together with his brother, he was confiscated by the veterinary office and previously lived in a small space with over 40 other dogs. When he arrived at the Animals in Not Odenwald animal shelter, Bruno was very reserved and could not be touched immediately. His brother has now found an experienced foster home so that he can learn the advantages of living in the house, while Bruno continues to hope for a suitable home in the animal shelter.

Bruno currently weighs almost 50 kilos and is expected to get even heavier. A free home with a large plot of land would be ideal for him, as he is not suitable for just living in an apartment. He shows great potential and is described as a “little diamond in the rough”, but he should not be placed with small dogs or small children. The animal shelter is also working on keeping him on a leash so that he can start his new life well. Bruno can imagine himself as a “guard dog” in a household with another dog and a family connection, but he will not be given away as an only dog.

A call to action

Providing livestock protection dogs is a responsibility that must be taken seriously. These dogs are not suitable for everyone, but in the right hands they can become wonderful family members. Anyone interested in adopting Bruno or one of the other protégés can contact the TINO office by phone at 06063/939848 or visit the website www.tiere-in-not-odenwald.de visit. Getting to know the animals only takes place by telephone arrangement to ensure that both people and dogs make the right choice.

In order to meet the challenges of these vigilant animals, organizations such as Herdenschutzhunde in Not e.V. rely on support. Be it through donations, volunteer work or simply passing on information - every helping hand counts to improve the living conditions of these special dogs.
