Brass ON inspires in Schotten: musical moments with standing ovations

On September 2nd, 2025, an impressive concert by the brass ensemble “Brass ON” took place in the Evangelical Church of Our Lady in Schotten. Under the expert direction of conductor Albert Wanner, the listeners were able to experience a musical fireworks display that took place as part of the “Musical Moments in Scotland” event series. Moderator Thilo Schulz charmingly led through the program and the pieces on offer were a true feast of sounds.

The program started with the “Procession of the Nobles” by Nicolaj Rimsky-Korsakov and continued impressively with a colorful mix of different music genres. From baroque to pop, the band designed a set that included both classical works such as the march from Johann Sebastian Bach's Cantata 207/b as well as modern classics such as Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody". The musical range even extended to famous film scores, such as John Williams' “Cantina Band Song,” which was recorded again for two encores as a special highlight.

An entertaining evening for everyone

The response from the audience was overwhelming. Standing applause and spontaneous shouts of bravo accompanied the performances and numerous visitors were thrilled by the musicians' brilliance. Felix Hermann, who shone on the flugelhorn, gave a particularly emotional accent with “Send in the Clowns”. The church board chairman Joachim Becker also praised the enjoyment of the music and recalled the good tradition of such concerts in the region.

Another important point of the event was the appeal by Karen Priebe, the chairwoman of the Church Music Support Association, for donations to support brass work in Upper Hesse. The donations were accepted at the exit and are intended to help make events like this possible in the future. Schotten is fortunate that the “Brass ON” ensemble has been active for over 21 years now and performs regularly in the region and internationally, including in South Africa and France.

A diverse ensemble

This is made up of talented musicians from Upper Hesse and Nassau-Nord. On stage are trumpeters such as Lillith Koeniger, Japhet Staab as well as Simon Zugck and Hannes Vaupel on the trombones, while Simon Boomgarden takes on the tuba and Johannes Becker takes on the cimbasso. It is noteworthy that such brass ensembles consist of members who often perform as soloists and thus represent their own musical voice. The fact that they implement this courage for individuality in the community is what makes the performance of “Brass ON” particularly special.

Overall, a brass ensemble, also known as a brass ensemble, offers an exciting combination of sounds that are excellent in both classical and modern settings. These formations are very popular not only in the church, but also in many other musical contexts.

The concert in Schotten once again showed how important it is to promote such cultural events. “Brass ON” not only impressed with its performance with excellent music, but also reinforced the sense of community among those present. And the musicians themselves expressed their willingness to return in the future - the anticipation is already palpable!
