Every 19th minute: Children at serious risk in traffic!

In 2024, alarming figures on traffic accidents involving children were published in Germany. Every 19 minutes, a child under the age of 15 experienced a dangerous traffic incident. According to the current statistics from Radio Lippe, a total of around 27,260 children had accidents. The number remained almost the same compared to 2023, where there were 27,240 affected children.

Particularly tragic: The number of children who died in accidents rose from 44 in 2023 to 53 in 2024. This development follows a decline in accidents during the corona pandemic in 2020 and 2021, when the numbers fell significantly. However, in 2022 and 2023 there was another worrying increase in the number of accidents.

Focus on causes of accidents

The statistics show clear patterns when it comes to children's road safety. 35 percent of the children involved in an accident were in a car, while 33 percent were cycling and 21 percent were walking. What is particularly worrying is that children up to the age of six were often involved in accidents in an adult's car, accounting for 58 percent. For school children aged 6 to 14, bicycles were the most common cause of accidents at 38 percent, followed by 29 percent in cars and 20 percent as pedestrians.

This shows that the way to school is a highly risky area. Most accidents involving school children occurred Monday to Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. when the children are on their way to school. The number of accidents fell again from 1 p.m., but increased again between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., after the students came home from school.

The responsibility of society

These tragic figures highlight the need to increase road safety for children. It is encouraging to see that initiatives like the Ohio Department of Children and Youth's KinderConnect system exist, aimed at ensuring children are protected in their environment. Access to sensitive data is confidential and only permitted for authorized users. Such responsibility should also be taken on in Germany in order to protect children in traffic and take preventative measures.

In summary, the appeal to all road users remains: Be careful and responsible. The safety of our children on the roads should be our top priority. The more we become aware of this and take action, the more we can push such sad statistics into the background.
