Rhineland-Palatinate: New climate protection law requires 100% renewables!
A new chapter for Rhineland-Palatinate: The draft law for a comprehensive state climate protection law (LKSG) is now available and brings with it major changes. The Rhineland-Palatinate state government plans to fundamentally reform the existing regulations from 2014. Loud Mercuryist The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2040 - an ambitious plan that also includes the interim targets of 67% by 2030 and 83% by 2035.
In view of the alarming temperature development - the annual average temperature in Rhineland-Palatinate has already risen by 1.8 degrees - the state government sees a need for action. Prime Minister Alexander Schweitzer explains that climate change not only has far-reaching ecological consequences, but also health and economic consequences. The climate impacts cause immense damage, which is estimated to be six times higher than the costs of limiting global warming to 2 degrees.
One law for all sectors
The new climate protection law provides for measures in various areas such as industry, transport, buildings, agriculture and waste management. Emissions must fall in all sectors in order to achieve the climate goals set, such as Press release from the Rhineland-Palatinate state government clarified.
A central point is the obligation to fully cover electricity needs in Rhineland-Palatinate with renewable energies by 2030. The boom in photovoltaic systems already shows that many citizens are actively involved in electricity production. The electrification of railway lines, for example in the Ahr Valley, should also make train travel emission-free and further promote the use of renewable energies.
Social and ecological responsibility
Economics Minister Daniela Schmitt emphasizes that the law aims to create a balance between economic strength, social responsibility and ecological progress. Unlike in the past, the obligation to implement the measures will rest primarily on the state government, without introducing new obligations for citizens or companies.
The measures should be reviewed annually, with the aim of broad participation from business, science and municipalities in implementation. The State chairman of ALLIANCE 90/THE GREENS emphasize the importance of transparency and commitment in the implementation of the law. The bill is now being discussed in the state parliament, and the second discussion is scheduled for July 2nd. A vote could take place as early as next week.
This is a significant step in a country that is already facing the consequences of climate change. With this draft law, the Rhineland-Palatinate state government shows that it is determined to initiate the necessary changes and lead Rhineland-Palatinate into a climate-friendly future.
