S-Bahn closure: Important information about the renewal of the Offenbach Tunnel!

Things will be quite turbulent in Frankfurt and Offenbach from today, July 5, 2025, from 9 p.m. The reason for this is extensive construction work in the City Tunnel, which will last until August 18th at five in the morning. The S-Bahn route between Offenbach and Frankfurt will be completely closed during this period in order to renew the fire protection at the underground stops. These important measures cost the railway around 180 million euros and are intended to significantly increase passenger safety.

The affected lines are primarily the S1, S2, S8 and S9, which must offer alternative connections. In order to maintain traffic flow, extensive replacement bus services will be set up. fnp.de reports that the S1 line runs every 30 minutes between Wiesbaden main station and Frankfurt Süd and also offers connections between Offenbach main station and Rödermark-Ober Roden. The S2 also runs every 30 minutes, from Niedernhausen to Frankfurt main station, and also between Offenbach Ost and Dietzenbach.

Replacement bus routes for the S-Bahn

The changeover period can be unusual for commuters, but the railway has also tried to find an optimal replacement bus service. Here is an overview of the most important replacement bus routes:

  • S1E: Offenbach Ost – Konstablerwache über Offenbach Marktplatz, Ledermuseum, Kaiserlei und Ostendstraße (kein Halt am Hauptbahnhof Offenbach).
  • S2E: Offenbach Hauptbahnhof – Konstablerwache über Ledermuseum, Kaiserlei und Ostendstraße.
  • S8E: Offenbach Ost – Frankfurt Flughafen über Hauptbahnhof Offenbach, Ledermuseum, Kaiserlei, Frankfurt Mühlberg und Frankfurt Süd.
  • S9E: Offenbach Ost – Frankfurt Süd über Hauptbahnhof Offenbach, Ledermuseum, Kaiserlei, Frankfurt Mühlberg.

However, the replacement buses will not only run sporadically. They are organized in such a way that they run every five minutes between Offenbach Ost and Frankfurt in order to cushion the postponed timetable as best as possible. Even if the S-Bahn lines are restricted in the coming weeks, transport operators want to ensure that public transport runs smoothly.

Planned closures and future work

How rmv.de Notes, these construction works are not the only ones. After the current phase, which runs until mid-August, phase 4 will follow between the 18th and 19th. August and the 1st/2nd October further nighttime restrictions. There will also be a complete closure between Offenbach Ost and Mühlberg during the autumn holidays, planned for the period from October 2nd to October 20th.

In addition to this work, numerous structural measures are planned at various S-Bahn stations, including the installation of a high-pressure water mist system at the Kaiserlei, Ledermuseum and Marktplatz stations in Offenbach, also to improve fire protection. The railway was able to successfully increase safety in the S-Bahn tunnel, and the investments made contribute to the long-term stability of the entire transport network.
