Animated Film Festival Wiesbaden 2025: Creative diversity and Oscar winners!

In Wiesbaden it is on November 6th, 2025 26th Animated Film Festival has been opened, promising a reunion with a colorful range of creative animations. Over 80 entries from 18 different countries delight audiences, including the acclaimed short film “Amen,” which tells the stories of pigs fleeing slaughter. A bold step that not only entertains, but also makes you think.

The festival has earned a permanent place in Wiesbaden's culture over more than 26 years. Detelina Grigorova-Kreck, who leads the festival in her role as organizer, notes that many smaller productions consciously forego artificial intelligence (AI). Nevertheless, the technology is omnipresent in the industry: although it enables complex images, it also carries the risk of endangering jobs.

An Oscar winner provides insights

None other than Christoph Lauenstein, who won an Oscar in 1990 with his short film “Balance,” was present at the opening of the festival. He presented his new work “The Perfect Day” and gave interesting insights into his work, which often relies on handmade animated films using clay, puppets and stop-motion technology. This technique has its own magical charm that captivates both children and adults.

Since 2008, the festival has had a competitive nature, with the audience determining the winners. The Oscar winner “Flow” is one of last year’s winning films that can now be seen in the program. For younger guests, there are special performances with ten selected animal stories that are not only entertaining, but also offer an educational component.

Program, tickets and more

The animation festival runs untilNovember 9th. Tickets can be reserved online, with the exception of the opening event and of course the popular film “Flow”. Whether it's animation, puppet shows or paper cutting - there's something for everyone here.

In times when many companies are relying on digital solutions and AI, the festival impressively shows that the world of handmade animation remains lively and attractive. The countless techniques represented in the program, including sand painting and classic computer animation, prove that creativity and ingenuity know no limits.

A highlight of the festival will undoubtedly be the variety of creative approaches, and it will be exciting to see how the industry will develop in the coming years - in the area of tension between tradition and technology.
