New beginnings in Botswana: Germans discover adventure in the Delta!

In the heart of Africa, more precisely in the spectacular Okavango Delta in Botswana, three German emigrants took the big step and built a new life for themselves. In a 27-minute documentary by Maja Dielhenn and Barbara Radl, which was produced by Visioneers, the makers present the unique new beginning of these adventurers. The editorial team, led by Michael Bartsch and Jasmin Hekmati, has put everything together to offer viewers an impressive perspective on this special travel destination, which is very popular with nature lovers and Africa fans.

The Okavango Delta is not only a breathtaking natural phenomenon, but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the few inner deltas in the world that does not flow into the sea. Every year, around 11 km³ of water flows over an area that varies between 6,000 and 15,000 km². This incredible aquatic landscape is home to a remarkable variety of plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. Documentaries often show how spectacular the wildlife is here, which includes the famous "Big Five", as well as over 400 species of birds and numerous species of fish.

New beginnings in the Delta

The three emigrants, who are curious about life in the Delta, couldn't be more different. Maika Kretschmer, an ex-Berliner, specializes in exciting adventure trips and does not hesitate to inspire visitors to the region with unique experiences. Your shop is a real magnet for adventure seekers.

Marc Baar, originally from Bavaria, chose a colorful start to life in Maun. There he opened his own restaurant, which will certainly be very welcome in the region. Meanwhile, Anja Barnard, who comes from Hamburg, runs a construction company with her husband that focuses on building lodges in the impressive Okavango Delta. These different perspectives and endeavors show that starting over can be both challenging and refreshing.

The wonder of the Okavango Delta

The delta itself offers not only fascinating flora and fauna, but also a history that dates back to the late 18th century, when the region was politically controlled by the Batawana. The landscape is made up of different geographic areas, such as the Panhandle and the Drylands, and varies in size depending on the season. If you visit the region in winter, it can get cold at night, while daytime temperatures can reach up to 40°C in summer.

Some flood water from the Okavango River, which flows 1,200 km from the Angolan highlands, collects in Lake Ngami every year. These annual flows are critical to the delta's ecosystem, which provides a variety of habitats including swamps, floodplains and dry lands. A variety of animal species, including elephants, giraffes and hippos, are native here and can often be spotted on mokoro canoe boat trips or on game drives.

However, environmental protection is on the agenda as concerns have been raised about oil exploration by Canadian company ReconAfrica, which could potentially have serious environmental consequences. Climate change is also making itself felt in the delta, as annual rainfall is expected to decrease and temperatures to rise.

In summary, the Okavango Delta is not only a paradise for nature lovers, but also a perfect stage for dramatic lifestyles and adventures. If you want to find out more about it, you shouldn't miss the film and the stories of Maika, Marc and Anja.
