Fraud couple in the Rotenburg district: Pregnant trick exposed!
The police are currently warning about a fraudulent couple in the Rotenburg (Wümme) district who are specifically robbing apartments. The duo uses a perfidious scam: the supposedly pregnant woman rings doorbells and pretends to need a glass of water. While she asks for help, her accomplice, an unknown man, searches the apartment unnoticed and steals valuables. There have already been two such incidents in the past few weeks, as NDR reports.
“We strongly advise not to let strangers into your own four walls,” explains a spokesman for the Rotenburg police station. Investigations are already underway to find out whether items were actually stolen. In one of the reported cases, drinking glasses are known to have been stolen, but other stolen items are still unclear. This practice, better known as the “glass water trick,” is a common scam used by fraudsters to gain entry into homes. The police see citizens as having a responsibility to be careful and to inform the police immediately if they see suspicious people, as Presseportal reports.
Prevention tips for the population
Fraud and theft are numerous and sophisticated forms of crime that can occur in many areas of life - be it on the telephone, in the supermarket or at home. The consequences are often not only material, but also psychological stress for the victims. For this reason, the police recommend finding out about preventative measures. If you are unsure, it is always advisable to contact the nearest police station or to obtain current information on websites such as Polizei BW.
Prevention can help many people keep an overview and effectively protect themselves from such brazen methods. It is advisable to always be skeptical of uninvited visitors. Simple mistrust can often be the best protection here. There is also a lot of information on recourse and abuse, for example from the Bundesnetzagentur or the independent contact points for consumers.
