A serious traffic accident shook the Braunschweig region on Saturday evening. On the B4, at the bridge over the Mittelland Canal, three people died, while another two people suffered serious injuries. The accident, which occurred around 6 p.m., not only had tragic consequences, but also resulted in criminal investigations.
How NDR Reportedly, a police patrol stopped a 34-year-old driver on the nearby A2 motorway. However, the driver did not obey the stop signal and sped off towards the B4. On the single-lane federal highway, he overtook several vehicles on the right, hit them and finally crossed into oncoming traffic, where he collided head-on with the car of a 47-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man.
A tragic end
The vehicle suspected of causing the accident broke through the bridge railing and fell into the Mittelland Canal. The three occupants of the accident car, all of whom suffered fatal injuries, could not be rescued on site Rhine newspaper reported. The 47-year-old, who was sitting in the car with the 54-year-old, was seriously injured, but her life is not in danger. The 53-year-old passenger in the other vehicle was flown by rescue helicopter to a clinic in Hanover with life-threatening injuries.
The police reported that the person suspected of causing the accident was traveling at excessive speed. The accident vehicle, which has since been recovered, was taken out of the canal by a special ship from Hanover while shipping traffic was temporarily suspended. In addition, federal highway 4 was temporarily completely closed in the affected area.
Investigations are ongoing
The public prosecutor's office has taken over the investigation and is examining the extent to which negligent homicide can be charged. This is particularly relevant given the circumstances that led to the serious accident. According to reports, there were several emergency calls about the accident shortly after the driver escaped, making the dramatic minute after the police stop even more haunting.
