Court stops wolf shooting: Nature conservation initiative wins for the time being!

The topic of wolves is causing excitement and discussion in the region around Cuxhaven. The Stade Administrative Court has currently made a preliminary decision that stops the shooting of a wolf in the Stade district. This happened due to an urgent application from the nature conservation association Nature Conservation Initiative, like North Sea newspaper reported.

The court order is a so-called hanging order, which intervenes before a final decision is made in the main proceedings in order to prevent a fait accompli. The approval for wolf removal, issued by the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation (NLWKN) on October 17th, may not come into force for the time being. The wolf that was scheduled to be shot may not be killed until the court has made a decision.

The background to the decision

The problem revolves around the numerous damage to livestock that was discovered in the Steinau region in the Cuxhaven district in September and October. Here, 36 animals, including sheep, cattle and a horse, were killed, while another 36 animals sustained injuries. Agriculture is therefore under pressure, while at the same time the focus is on protecting wolves, which are subject to strict national and international nature conservation guidelines. The wolf management The aim in Germany is to minimize conflicts between humans and wolves and to promote acceptance of the animal species.

The Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture plays an important role in this regard, supporting companies in applying for funding in order to take preventive measures against wolf attacks. As part of the Wolf Directive, both financial compensation payments for livestock injuries and support for the purchase of wolf-repellent protective fences and livestock guard dogs are offered. Information on applications is available from the Chamber of Agriculture, which also provides materials on herding safety, such as the Safe Pasture Fences brochure. The NLWKN The aim is to both support animal husbandry and protect wolves.

In view of these developments, it is clear that further balancing between nature conservation and the interests of agriculture is necessary. The wolf is not only a symbol of successful species protection measures in Germany, but also a potential factor for conflicts in rural areas. The court's upcoming decisions are therefore highly anticipated as they could have far-reaching consequences for wolf management in the region and beyond.
