Apple Day in Jardinghausen: A celebration for the entire region!
On October 12, 2025, the eagerly awaited Apple Day took place in Jardinghausen, organized by the village community association. For the fourth time, several hundred visitors experienced a colorful hustle and bustle around the fire station, which was quickly transformed into a cheerful folk festival. The event attracts both locals and numerous guests from the region, even though Jardinghausen only has around 300 residents.
The main attraction of the day was the opportunity to have your own apples pressed directly on site. This opportunity was eagerly seized and the coveted time slots for the juicer were quickly booked up. Silke and Thomas Gerken from Syke brought an impressive 300 kilograms of apples from their orchard in Clues, from which they expected an amount of juice of 150 to 200 liters. These are bottled in practical 5 liter containers.
A highlight for the whole family
In the midst of the fruity anticipation, Oliver Schmale from Oldenburg, who was in Jardinghausen for the first time, presented himself. He bought his own juicer 20 years ago after a political group rejected his proposal. You could see the joy of the visitors when the freshly made juices went over the counter.
But it wasn't just juice lovers who got their money's worth. The village community association also treated the guests to homemade apple waffles and delicious apple cake. Ulrike Templin, the association's chairwoman, insisted on preparing potato pancakes with homemade applesauce. It was the perfect addition to the event, which had a fun program for many families: bouncy castles, archery and spinning sheep's wool put everyone in a good mood.
The importance of orchards
Apple Day is not only a celebration of fruit, but also an opportunity to consider the importance of orchards. Annual apple collections, such as those from OUR COUNTRY are organized, contribute to the preservation and planting of these species-rich habitats. Apples from private gardens and orchards are collected to produce naturally cloudy, direct juice with 100% fruit content. There are over 2,300 apple varieties in Bavaria, which illustrates the immense diversity of this tradition.
Orchards are not only of great importance for biological diversity - they provide a habitat for numerous animal and plant species and also support beekeeping. Unfortunately, their numbers have fallen from 1.5 million in 1950 to only around 400,000 today. Preserving these meadows is therefore more important than ever, especially given the challenges posed by climate change and new EU regulations.
At the end of the day, the response to Apple Day was overwhelming. Ulrike Templin and her team were extremely satisfied with the support from the helpers and the enthusiasm of the visitors, who will surely flock to Jardinghausen again next year.
