Bird flu situation in Emsland: 18,000 turkey cocks affected!

On October 31, 2025, we received the news that bird flu had broken out again in the Emsland district. A poultry farm in the Lengerich municipality is affected, where the dangerous H5N1 virus was found in around 18,000 turkey cocks. According to that RegionalUpdate Another outbreak was registered in Geeste the day before with 4,400 infected animals. The suspicion was confirmed by the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) and the infected animals had to be killed in an animal welfare manner.

As a result, the Emsland district has set up extensive exclusion zones to prevent the virus from spreading further. In the 3 km protection zone around the outbreak site there are now 15 commercial operations with a total of around 280,000 animals as well as 22 hobby farms with around 350 animals. The 10 km monitoring zone even includes 55 commercial farms with over 3 million animals and 240 hobby farms with around 3,900 animals. The neighboring district of Osnabrück is also affected by these restrictions.

Strict regulations and safety measures

There are numerous regulations intended to ensure biosecurity for the affected owners. In particular, a general order will be issued regarding the housing of poultry, and the transport of poultry and eggs is strictly prohibited in the restriction zones. Owners are required to adhere to strict biosecurity measures, including wearing protective clothing and disinfected shoes. The authorities are also urgently warning against further spread of the virus, which could occur through direct contact or indirectly via vehicles, equipment or wild birds.

Current information and maps of the restriction zones are available on the Emsland website www.emsland.de to find.

Summary and outlook

Overall, the current bird flu outbreak shows that the virus continues to pose a serious threat to poultry farming. The Emsland district is taking the situation very seriously in order to ensure healthy animal husbandry and thus also the food supply. Stay informed and follow regulations to limit the spread.

Finally, we would like to point out that such incidents should encourage us to continually promote information about agricultural practices and the safe handling of animals.
