Energy transition in Hanover: 24 billion euros and 4,100 new jobs!

Current developments and forecasts show that the energy transition has the potential to become a real economic engine for the Hanover region. As part of a comprehensive study commissioned by the Hanover region, the positive effects of the energy transition on the local economy were examined in detail. Among other things, it is expected that faster investments in renewable energies will not only increase tax revenues, but also create numerous jobs. The regional economy could generate additional gross value added of around 9.5 billion euros and create around 4,100 new jobs every year - these are promising prospects for the future of the region.

According to the report by NDR Investments of around 24.9 billion euros are expected in the region by 2035, with almost 60 percent of these funds remaining locally. What is also particularly important is that municipalities could benefit from a forecast increase in tax revenue of around 470 million euros. This is a clear incentive for local companies, especially in the trades, that specialize in the construction and maintenance of wind and solar systems.

A warm welcome to renewable energies

Lower Saxony's Energy and Climate Protection Minister Christian Meyer emphasizes that the Hanover region's funding programs are not only intended to encourage private households to actively participate in the energy transition, for example by investing in heat pumps or improved insulation. These measures are crucial to reduce dependence on international energy markets and at the same time strengthen local value creation.

It is particularly encouraging that Lower Saxony has so far brought more than 100 new energy production plants online. It is now becoming clear how important increasing electricity production from renewable sources is for the state's future energy strategy. The share of renewable energies in final energy consumption for heating and cooling is now 18.1 percent and will continue to rise, according to an analysis by Federal Ministry of Economics proven.

Local solutions and citizen participation

The DIW Econ study also shows that the innovative strength of regional companies in the field of energy technology and digitalization will continuously increase in the coming years. Increased development of our own solutions is expected, which will not only strengthen the regional economy but also increase security of supply. Municipal companies are on the rise and are creating a large number of new jobs. Last but not least, the construction sector benefits from this, doing particularly well with around 55 percent of the employment effects determined in the study.

A further step in this direction is the establishment of a region's own energy cooperative, which enables citizens to participate directly in electricity generation. This not only strengthens the acceptance of the energy transition - the residents are actively involved in the implementation of climate protection measures.

In summary, one can say: The energy transition brings not only ecological but also economic advantages. The Hanover region is well advised to continue to set the course for this positive development and to consistently push ahead with plans for the expansion of renewable energies, as already shown in the study results.
