First coin for the Eise Eisinga Planetarium: A world heritage you can touch!

In 2024, the Eise Eisinga Planetarium in Franeker will receive a special honor: it will receive its own collector's coin. This coin, issued on the occasion of the planetarium's UNESCO World Heritage status, is a further symbol of the appreciation of this historic place, which was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2023. As reported by Omroep Zilt, the coin will be released in 2026 and will be part of an annual series of two special collector's coins.

With these coins, the Dutch Ministry of Finance honors important events, personalities or facts that have a connection to the history of the Netherlands. It will issue a World Heritage-themed coin every two years, and the Eisinga Planetarium coin is the first of its kind. The last comparable release was a stamp in 1994 that highlighted the planetarium.

Coin design and usage

Adrie Warmenhoven, the director of the Eisinga Planetarium, hopes for a striking design that reflects the planetarium's special features, such as its roof and the planets. Artists will be invited to submit their designs and the Coin Advisory Commission will select the best design. Warmenhoven estimates that the 5 or 10 euro coin could be used both as a collector's item and as legal tender.

The decision to honor the Eisinga Planetarium is no coincidence. The planetarium was built between 1774 and 1781 by the amateur astronomer Eise Eisinga and is considered the oldest, still functioning planetarium in the world. It features a full-scale, moving model of our solar system and has exceptional social and cultural value, underlined by UNESCO recognition.

A look into the future

In addition to the planetarium coin release, 2026 will also feature the theme “25 Years of Opening Marriage,” honoring the Netherlands’ pioneering spirit in this area. These two topics are intended to provide citizens and collectors with a valuable opportunity to engage with Dutch history and culture. The Eisinga Planetarium coin will be released in spring 2026 and is already eagerly awaited by many.
