In the last few weeks, the cannabis scene in Germany has made waves. A current case from Bad Lauterberg highlights the dark businesses surrounding the popular cannabis plants. At the Herzberg District Court, two Albanian citizens, 22 and 37 years old, were recently sentenced to suspended sentences for commercial trafficking and cultivation of cannabis in large quantities. This happened as part of a process that had its origins in an attack on their plantation.
The judge imposed a prison sentence of 1.5 years, the execution of which was suspended for a probationary period of three years. This means that the two can return to Albania as soon as possible after their pre-trial detention. The plantation was discovered by chance when a local resident reported a suspicious vehicle. During their trip to be arrested, the two were lucky in misfortune: they were threatened with firearms by masked men who were also interested in their valuable plants.
Cannabis plantation raid
The attack was not an isolated incident. In April of this year, three men, supported by two unknown accomplices, broke into a former butcher shop to steal cannabis plants. The police were alerted and were able to arrest the perpetrators before they could escape with their loot. This shows how much cannabis, which according to estimates had a black market value of around 200,000 euros, is the focus of criminals. The three people arrested are now on trial at the Göttingen regional court for particularly serious robbery.

What is less known: Cannabis has a long history as a crop, which primarily begins in Asia. The plant species is mainly divided into two main types: Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica. While one variant is often used for leisure activities, there are also important industrial applications, such as the production of textiles and organic oil. The term “hemp” is usually used for varieties that contain no or very little THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis.
That wasn't always the case. Perspectives and legal frameworks have changed over the years, and today cannabis is one of the most popular recreational drugs worldwide. Whether as medicine or as a recreational product, the discussion about the legalization and regulation of cannabis is in full swing and it remains to be seen how the market in Germany will develop further.
Regardless of whether you are talking about medical applications or the purely herbal aspects, cannabis remains a topic that still holds a certain fascination for many. However, the Bad Lauterberg case also shows the dark side associated with drug trafficking and raises concerns about neighborhood safety and the dangers of criminal attacks.
