Göttingen Police: Intensified measures against bicycle thefts!
The Göttingen police have recently increased their measures against bicycle theft and are relying on a comprehensive, tactical concept. The increased controls aim to increase security for citizens and curb the high number of bicycle thefts and stolen goods in the region. Inspection manager Marco Hansmann explained that Groner Landstrasse in particular is being targeted, where worrying developments such as an increase in fires in residential complexes have already been identified. The police will regularly inspect large residential complexes to create a feeling of security for residents and to gain information about crimes. These inspections take place both during the day and at night, depending on the volume of operations. Göttingen Tageblatt reports that the police have already had initial successes. Among other things, a stolen women's bike was seized in Geismar as well as a high-quality e-bike and an e-scooter on Groner Landstrasse.
But that's not all: the motorway police are also involved in the measures. The preferred routes of bicycle thieves should be monitored more closely, especially on the A7 and A38 motorways. An example of a successful check is the discovery of a stolen mountain bike while checking a sprinter on the A7.
Prevention measures
In order to sensitize citizens and provide them with better information about bicycle thefts, the police are planning a “bicycle information week”. This week, prevention tips and videos will be distributed via social media. Information stands and press releases are also planned in public places to raise awareness about the protection of bicycles. The controls will not only be intensified in residential areas, but the presence in other hot spots such as schools and swimming pools should also be increased.
The police react flexibly to the increasing dangers and enormous conflicts that are increasing in the residential complexes. It is hoped that the announced measures will develop a better ability to deal with these challenges and give citizens a feeling of security. The high volume of bicycle thefts that has been observed in recent years shows the need for action: from 2014 to 2024, over 300,000 bicycle thefts were recorded by the police in Germany Statista.
The Göttingen police have only taken the first steps, but the development of the situation is being monitored closely. “It is very important to us to increase security in Göttingen,” says Hansmann. If they have any suspicions or suspicious observations, citizens should not hesitate to contact the police in order to work together to create a safe environment and counteract bicycle thefts. Further information and contact options for the Göttingen police station are available on their website Press portal.
