Orange benches in Nordhorn: A strong sign against violence against women!

A bright orange bench has recently adorned the town hall forecourt in Nordhorn. With this campaign, the city and the district of Grafschaft Bentheim are sending a clear signal against violence against women and girls, which is considered important by many. This initiative is part of the large “Domestic Violence” working group, which works together with various actors such as equal opportunities officers, specialist advice centers and the police. Mayor Thomas Berling emphasizes that violence in any form must have no place in our society and calls for people to open their eyes to this serious issue, while Anja Milewski, the Equal Opportunities Officer, emphasizes that such actions should serve to raise awareness of domestic violence.

A total of three orange benches will be set up in Nordhorn. In addition to the one at the town hall, there will soon be two more at the police station and the district hall. These benches aren't just eye-catching; they are intended to encourage people to pause and get conversations going. QR codes on the benches lead to a website that provides comprehensive information about help and advice offers in the county of Bentheim. This digital support is an important element of the campaign to make it easier for those affected to get help.

Symbolism and inspiration

The color orange, which is dominant in this campaign, symbolizes more than just an eye-catching look. Worldwide it stands for hope, visibility and the pursuit of a life without violence. The background to this initiative is the global campaign “Orange the World”, which was launched as part of the United Nations’ “UNiTE to End Violence against Women” strategy. Since 1991, this campaign has brought people together to take a clear stand against gender-based violence. Every year from November 25th to December 10th, the so-called “Orange Days”, numerous actions take place to draw attention to this issue.

The response to the first bench installation has been consistently positive. It has the potential to become not only a place for reflection, but also a meeting place for affected women and girls to exchange their experiences and seek help. This kind of solidarity and support is essential in our society today because every voice counts when it comes to combating violence and empowering women.

These initiatives from Nordhorn make a valuable contribution to sending a signal of hope and togetherness in the region. It remains to be hoped that many people will take a seat on the orange bench who will have the courage to address issues and take active action against violence against women and girls. Together we create a world that is safe for everyone!
