Hanover is looking for pedestrians for a climate protection project in the northern part of the city!
Hanover has big plans in the fight against the challenges of climate change. The city is currently looking for committed pedestrians from the northern part of the city who are willing to actively participate in the nationwide model project “Better climate in communities works well”. The aim is to promote foot traffic and test climate adaptation measures. Interested parties only have until August 12th to register to take part in the project and contribute their experiences. The German Foot Traffic Association (FUSS e.V.) launched the initiative, supported by the CHRYSANTIL Foundation.
Why the Nordstadt of all places? These districts are chosen as model neighborhoods to test concepts such as shade trees, wide sidewalks and safe crossing options. Mayor Belit Onay emphasizes the urgency of the measures and emphasizes that pedestrians need to be particularly protected in times of hot days and heavy rain. Climate change is causing noticeable weather influences that directly affect the road space. Steps are all the more necessary to make pedestrian traffic more attractive and safer in order to secure and promote basic mobility.
Conditions of participation and outlook
Participation is open to everyone who lives, works or often travels on foot in the northern part of the city. Those interested are asked to document their everyday observations and make suggestions for improvement. Specific, implementable measures are to be developed as part of the project by August 2026. The first step begins with training for participants, which is scheduled to take place this month. “Through the inspections we want to gain important insights into promoting foot traffic,” says Onay.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy that is particularly relevant in large cities like Hanover. These cities have long been committed to climate protection. The important areas of action include the promotion of environmentally friendly modes of transport and the consideration of climate protection criteria in municipal land-use planning. Adaptations to the expected climate changes were developed in a catalog of measures. The need to make public spaces safer for all road users is a central concern Hannover.de reports that... and is supported, among other things, by an analysis by the German Association of Cities Städtetag.de states that….
The first practical tests of the ideas are scheduled to take place on the streets in the summer of 2026. The city hopes that the experience gained and the measures subsequently implemented will not only improve the quality of stay, but also increase resilience to the effects of climate change. As one of only four cities in this model project, alongside Cologne, Luckenwalde and Nürtingen, Hanover is taking on a pioneering role. A good knack for dealing with the challenges ahead could be the key to a more sustainable urban environment.
