Fire in Hanover-Misburg: Sports hall burnt down - cause known!

A frightening event occurred on Thursday evening in Hanover-Misburg: There was a devastating fire in the gymnasium of the Mühlenweg elementary school. According to police, the cause of the fire is believed to be related to previous roof work. Therefore, criminal proceedings were initiated against unknown persons for negligent arson. Witnesses who were present during the work are also currently being questioned.

The fire department was alerted at 6:44 p.m. after several people reported heavy smoke. Around 200 emergency services were on site to fight the fire. The extinguishing work lasted more than 24 hours and was made more difficult by collapsed parts of the building and a damaged telescopic mast. Fortunately, there were no people in the hall at the time of the outbreak.

The extent of the destruction

The gymnasium was almost completely burned down and the city estimates the damage at around five million euros. Mayor Belit Onay visited the emergency services and spoke of a dramatic loss for the community. Thanks to the fire department's quick reactions, the fire was prevented from spreading to the adjacent school building. Nevertheless, the school will remain closed on Monday, which is why classes are canceled for the students at Mühlenweg elementary school.

Residents were asked to keep their windows and doors closed during the operation as the smoke was heavy and visible for miles. The warning apps NINA and KATWARN were activated to inform and protect the population in a timely manner. During the extinguishing work, two firefighters suffered minor burn injuries to their hands and had to be taken to a clinic, although one of them has already been released.
