There is currently a lot of movement around the Hanover-Hamburg railway line, one of the most important and at the same time most controversial connections in Germany. Deutsche Bahn (DB) has been planning a significant expansion or even a new construction of this route for years. At the end of June 2025, the preferred solution was presented: A new building would lead from Hanover via Bergen and Soltau along the A7 to Hamburg. This plan not only has supporters, but also causes great resistance.
Environmentalists express massive concerns about the encroachment on natural areas worthy of protection, particularly the Lüneburg Heath. Residents, on the other hand, see the risk of increased noise pollution and fear unnecessary land use in their region. Critics also argue that expanding the existing route via Lüneburg, known as the Alpha-E project, would be quicker and easier to implement. Nevertheless, Deutsche Bahn sees no other option and emphasizes that the new building would create more capacity for passenger trains and freight traffic in the long term.

The DB is convinced that the new construction will relieve pressure on the existing route via Lüneburg and benefit local transport. According to their assessment, the new building can ensure not only more punctual but also faster connections, which is of great importance in the context of the planned Germany clock.
