Lower Saxony is upgrading disaster protection with 30 new tank systems!

On September 30, 2025, the time had come: In Celle-Scheuen, 30 new mobile tank systems were handed over to various disaster control units in Lower Saxony. This handover, reported by regionalheute.de, marks a significant step towards strengthening the operational capability in crisis situations.

Specifically, the city of Salzgitter, the city of Braunschweig and the districts of Helmstedt and Peine each received their own trailer. What is particularly noteworthy is that the Salzgitter fire department was assigned a specific trailer. The ASB regional association in Braunschweig and the ASB district association in the Helmstedt district were also equipped with a system. In the Peine district, the German Red Cross will integrate the mobile filling station into its fleet.

Important investments for disaster protection

The importance of this initiative is underlined by the words of Interior Minister Daniela Behrens. She emphasized how important a reliable fuel supply is in the event of a disaster in order to be able to optimally support the emergency services. The newly introduced mobile tank systems are equipped with a capacity of around 980 liters of diesel and 170 liters of AdBlue. This means that power generators, pumps and heaters can be supplied directly at the point of use.

Another plus point: the tank systems come with modern pumping and counting devices as well as extensive safety equipment, which makes them a valuable tool in crisis situations. The aim is to avoid logistical bottlenecks and improve the endurance of the emergency services. In total, the investment for the 30 tank systems amounts to around 1.33 million euros. These funds come from an extensive 40 million euro package for the gradual modernization of disaster protection in Lower Saxony, such as mi.niedersachsen.de highlights.

Technical instruction and training

The technical briefing of the new systems also took place in Celle-Scheuen. New to this procurement is the creation of video operating instructions, which are intended to enable emergency services to quickly and location-independently familiarize themselves with the technology. This ensures that the mobile tank systems can be used efficiently and safely, meaning that the emergency services are best prepared for emergencies.

A big step forward for Lower Saxony: In addition to the systems that have already been handed over, a further 27 tank systems are being planned by the end of 2025, which are intended to further strengthen operational readiness in the Braunschweig-Salzgitter region as well as in the Peine and Helmstedt districts.

In addition, Lower Saxony has also set up four special units for fighting vegetation fires on the ground since 2021, which are called GFFF-V (Ground Forest Firefighting using Vehicles). According to nlbk.niedersachsen.de, these units are equipped with modern fire engines and command cars in order to be able to react quickly and effectively in an emergency.

Overall, these developments show how Lower Saxony is constantly modernizing its disaster protection and adapting it to the challenges of our time in order to guarantee its citizens a safe environment.
