Thomas Bob” Ranner: New qualified coach gives impetus to volleyball!
On November 5th, 2025 there will be reason to be happy in volleyball in Germany. Thomas “Bob” Ranner has successfully completed his training at the coaching academy and can now adorn himself with the titles of “state-certified trainer of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia” and “certified trainer of the DOSB”. The Cologne native, who also works as assistant coach of the men's national team, national U23 male coach and coach of the first division team WWK Volleys Herrsching, has spent the last three years intensively studying the intricacies of the sport of volleyball in part-time training. Ranner took part in four days of classes in Cologne about once a month.
“It was an intensive time that gave me a lot,” says Ranner, who particularly appreciates the exchange with other qualified trainer colleagues. The training was given by Dr. Jimmy Czimek, the DVV coach instructor and volleyball coordinator of the coaching academy. Without the support of many people, this trip would not have been possible, said the new qualified trainer.
A look at training
Ranner's academic journey was characterized by practical experience and theoretical knowledge. During his time at the coaching academy, he took part in important international events such as two World Championships and two European Championships and was active in several Volleyball Nations Leagues and the FISU World Games. In addition, due to his participation in the Olympics with the men's national team, he was able to extend his training period by a year.
The coaching academy is not just a training facility, but a place where the next generation of coaches is formed. Particularly noteworthy are offers such as the module series for aspiring sports psychologists, which starts on November 18, 2025 in Vienna. Here the participants are trained in the practical phase and work together with athletes, trainers and teams. This practical training is intended to ensure that graduates can get started in practice straight away. Registrations are already possible for the module series in Cologne, which begins in 2026/2027, and there are still places available.
The role of sport psychology
There is also exciting news in another area of sport, sport psychology. Various modules and workshops offer athletes and coaches the opportunity to improve their mental strength. The graduates cooperate with, among others, Olympic centers and renowned football clubs such as Werder Bremen, Fortuna Düsseldorf and 1. FC Cologne. Such initiatives show that, in addition to physical fitness, the mental health of athletes is also very important.
Overall, Thomas Ranner proves that passion and hard work pay off in sport. His experiences and successes in training will give great impetus not only to him, but also to German volleyball.
For anyone interested in developments in sport, Ranner's progress and the coaching academy's offerings are an absolute must. If you would like to go deeper, you can find information on the volleyball association and sports psychology training website.
