Through Europe in a van: an adventure from Lisbon to Lapland!

An adventure on four wheels: Photographer Peter Gebhard undertook an impressive journey through 15 countries in his VW van “Erwin”, covering 25,000 kilometers. This unique tour from Lisbon to Lapland will come to life on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at 5 p.m. in the auditorium of the Campe-Gymnasium in Holzminden. In a live report, which is organized in collaboration with the KVHS Holzminden, Gebhard talks about his encounters and experiences on this exciting journey.

The professional photographer traveled through southern and northern Europe together with his assistant Tobi. He met a wide variety of people at his side. Among other things, he met mussel divers on the Spanish Atlantic coast and a young woman from the Allgäu region who had become the princess of a small mountain village in picturesque Liguria. A real enrichment was also the encounter with a Swiss farming family with whom Gebhard stayed on the mountain pasture.

From the cradle of culture to the far north

The adventurer's itinerary led through various impressive landscapes, including the desert of northern Spain and the majestic Pyrenees. He also stopped in Liguria, at Lake Constance and at the mouth of the Oder. The trip even took him to the Baltics and Finland, where he met Sami reindeer herders whom he had photographed 25 years ago. Such encounters made the trip a journey through time full of nostalgic memories and fresh impressions.

However, the trip wasn't just a pleasure - it also presented some technical challenges. Several breakdowns such as broken clutch cables and defective starter motors did not stop Gebhard and his van from experiencing the breathtaking northern lights over Lapland. This sight was the emotional highlight of his tour and will certainly be noticeable in the numerous pictures and stories in the report.
