Last wishes: Dirk experiences an unforgettable day at the Hanover State Museum!
What's going on in Lower Saxony? We are currently receiving moving news about Dirk, a man who was once passionate about traveling and is now in the palliative care ward of a clinic in the Hanover region due to an incurable illness and his advanced age. Dirk doesn't have an easy time of it and will soon be moved to a hospice, but his heart still beats for adventures and experiences. For this reason he is from ASB wish car Lower Saxony supported to make his little dream come true.
Together with his wife Anja and the dedicated Wish Car team, Dirk went on a trip to the Hanover State Museum. There he found great joy in art, culture and history and was pushed through the impressive exhibitions in a wheelchair. Memories of previous trips came flooding back as he drove through the museum's corridors. After a fulfilling morning at the museum, there was a detour to the banks of the Maschsee, where a hearty portion of potato salad was waiting for him - a very special moment away from the hospital routine.
A project with heart
The Wish Car project has existed since 2014 and has set itself the goal of giving people in the last phase of life an individual and fulfilling farewell. In addition to visiting favorite places, live concerts or sporting events are also offered to create unforgettable experiences. This happens not only with a smile, but also with the best possible palliative care, which is of great importance for those affected. The Wish Car Project is a nationwide commitment of the ASB Regionalverband Ruhr e. V. and is financed solely through donations.
The support does not come by chance. LSW Holding GmbH & Co from Wolfsburg has foregone Christmas presents since 2010 and instead invests in social institutions. In 2019, several institutions were supported, including the Wish Car. Each project received a donation of 2,500 euros to be able to give sick people these special moments. Managing director Sybille Schönbach explains: “We are convinced that every person deserves the opportunity to experience unforgettable moments, even in the face of illness.” Also Dr. Frank Kästner highlights the role of volunteerism in these organizations and shows how important a strong network of supporters is.
