Lüneburg's city center is revitalizing: new hotel and cultural events!

There are exciting developments in the charming city of Lüneburg. The threat of inner city death, which has also affected many cities in Lower Saxony since the Corona pandemic, is being counteracted by creative ideas and new initiatives. The focus is particularly on the newly opened Hotel Heidkrug, which is located in a 600-year-old building in the old town. The operators Antje Blumenbach and Stefan Ennen have set themselves the goal of turning this historic place into a meeting place for citizens and tourists. Borkener Zeitung reports that three free music events and readings are planned as part of the opening by the end of the year to bring people together.

“We have to talk to people,” says Blumenbach. This statement is particularly understandable considering that many retailers have experienced a major lull in traffic following the pandemic. In Lüneburg, a total of 33 commercial spaces were unused on October 30th. This makes it all the more important for the city to support projects like the Heidkrug. Mayor Claudia Kalisch (Greens) praises the opening of the hotel as a real benefit for the city, which is suffering from the consequences of Corona.

Cultural heart and gastronomy in the Heidkrug

The Hotel Heidkrug, just 300 meters from the city center and very close to sights such as the German Salt Museum and the Lüneburg Theater, not only offers eight cozy rooms with private bathrooms and free Wi-Fi. It also combines gastronomy and culture in an appealing way. At Café Lil, guests can enjoy delicious coffee, tea and homemade cakes. The daily breakfast also offers vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options - ideal for all culinary enthusiasts! Holiday check emphasizes that the friendly service of the staff provides many tips for activities in the area.

Blumenbach herself decided to give up her other business “Provinzperle” at the end of the year in order to devote herself fully to the hotel, where she will be offering Palatinate wine in the future. This means that the Hotel Heidkrug will not only be a place for overnight stays, but also a cultural focal point in Lüneburg.

A sign against the forgetting of the inner cities

The corona pandemic has not only severely affected retailers, but it also clearly shows how important changes are in city centers. The structural change accelerated by the pandemic requires new ideas and approaches to keep city centers vibrant. In an article in the German Construction Magazine, the author Anne Katrin Bohle describes how politicians are making a targeted effort to promote and shape this change. BISP Surf discusses this need in detail and shows that initiatives like the Heidkrug are an important step in the right direction.

In summary, it can be said that the Heidkrug and its operators are trying with a lot of commitment and fresh ideas to make the heart of Lüneburg beat again. Linking culture, gastronomy and personal exchange could be the key to preventing the impending extinction of the inner city and strengthening social cohesion in the city.
