Safe routes for Reppenstedt: New cycle and footpath launch in October!

An important milestone in traffic planning was achieved in Reppenstedt: the construction and expansion of the shared footpaths and cycle paths along the Lüneburger Landstrasse (L216) was completed in September 2025. The newly designed paths are intended to enable both pedestrians and cyclists to travel safely, as safety on our roads is currently at the top of the agenda. The new traffic routing allows cyclists to use the road in inner-city areas, which is clearly marked by pictograms on the street. When you reach the junction with Hasenwinkler Weg, cycling traffic runs from this point to the town hall on the right side of the street.

The measure was implemented in close coordination between the Lüneburg district and the Lower Saxony State Authority for Road Construction and Transport (NLStBV). Cyclists now share the path with pedestrians, but no longer in the opposite direction. This regulation is intended to help prevent accidents and increase the feeling of safety in the community. If you are unsure, you can still use the sidewalk in the direction of travel, but you must be considerate of pedestrians and adjust your speed.

Details about the expansion

A particularly important point is the expansion of the waste water canals, which is also part of the project. The old canal will be expanded and replaced with a new canal in order to meet future environmental protection standards and optimize the wastewater supply.

Safety in focus

In the context of road safety, the German Traffic Watch has, according to its own reports, advocated measures to make pedestrian traffic safer. In particular, the abolition of shared walking and cycling paths was discussed in a recommendation on June 20 and 21, 2025. At the same time, a study by the ADFC from 2024 shows that the need for action in the area of cycling infrastructure in Germany is enormous. In large cities like Cologne, less than 50% of those surveyed said they felt safe on the cycle paths. Over 60% of city dwellers are in favor of a 30 km/h speed limit in city centers in order to increase the feeling of safety.

The need for a safe and functional cycle path network is also noticeable in Reppenstedt. The current developments could not only serve as a model for other municipalities, but also help raise awareness of improved infrastructure throughout Germany. A good knack for planning and implementation is required so that all road users feel safe and comfortable.
