Lower Saxony Technical Center: Get started in MINT careers on July 4th!

On July 3, 2025, Jade University will announce an exciting opportunity for young women in Lower Saxony: The Lower Saxony Technical Center, a program that offers orientation in MINT careers (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology). The information event will take place online on Friday, July 4, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Anyone interested can register by emailing the coordinator Ina Becker: ina.becker@jade-hs.de. Participation is accompanied by interesting insights into the program and the study opportunities at the three Jade University locations.

The Lower Saxony Technical Center has set itself the goal of inspiring young women in particular for MINT subjects and making it easier for them to enter technical careers. The initiated funding of around 800,000 euros from the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture supports this project under the motto: “Try it – then study!” The program lasts six months and includes a paid internship in a company during which participants can test their STEM skills. At the same time, they attend a “taster course” at one of the participating universities. Participants not only receive valuable practical experience, but also an internship allowance.

Cooperation between universities and companies

Networking between universities and companies is a central component of the project, which is scheduled to start in the coming winter semester. Eleven universities have already confirmed their participation, including the Leibniz University of Hanover, the Jade University and the technical universities in Clausthal and Braunschweig. What is particularly noteworthy is that Volkswagen AG provides 25 places for aspiring female technicians at various production sites in Lower Saxony. Employer associations and the NiedersachsenMetall Foundation also support the project by advertising internship positions in around 300 member companies.

This program is particularly important, especially in view of the current study situation, which shows that only 56% of women with a MINT degree work in relevant professions. Many women do not find themselves in STEM careers due to a lack of role models or unclear career expectations. The initiatives aim to break this trend and bring more women into these promising areas, because the MINT industry offers attractive remuneration models and exciting fields of activity. The obvious discrepancy and the shortage of skilled workers, especially in the IT sector, show that there is a need for action here.

Initiatives to promote women in MINT

In addition to the Lower Saxony Technical Center, there are numerous initiatives that aim to support girls and women in MINT courses. Programs like “Komm, mach MINT” and MINTvernetzt try to promote the MINT community in Germany and inform girls about their career options. These programs must continue to be expanded and supported in order to bring about the necessary change towards greater gender equality in technical professions. It is high time for youngsters to get excited about the MINT world and show that women can also be successful in these areas.

We look forward to taking part in the information event and are excited to see what new impulses the Lower Saxony Technical Center will provide! Further information can be found on the Jade University website: jade-hs.de/technikum.
