Road chaos in Northern Germany: Over 100 accidents in one night!

Winter has Germany firmly in its grip! On December 28, 2025, there will be dangerously slippery conditions in many parts of the country, especially in the north. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of freezing wet conditions and hoar frost and calls for people to be careful. However, according to the current forecasts for Sunday, the weather situation will improve significantly, with milder temperatures on the coasts, while frost and fields of fog will continue to make road conditions difficult in the inland regions.

There was a wave of traffic accidents on Sunday night, with Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania being particularly badly affected. The police recorded more than two dozen accidents there, most of which were minor, but road conditions remain critical. In Lower Saxony, the police also reported many icy accidents, including a serious incident on Autobahn 1 in Wildeshausen in which five people were injured.

Worrying accident numbers

The accumulation of accidents is alarming: According to Tagesspiegel, over 110 traffic accidents were reported in a single night in the city of Braunschweig. In Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg, the emergency services also had to go on numerous slippery missions because the roads were partly slippery.

Particularly tragic: In Lastrup, the car of a 22-year-old mother with her baby overturned. Fortunately, both remained largely uninjured. Extreme caution is currently required throughout the region. A weather warning from the DWD is in effect until the morning as freezing rain continues to worsen conditions. Many drivers were surprised by the slippery conditions and had great difficulty controlling their vehicles.

Weather conditions and forecasts

The DWD explains that the weather situation is characterized by a weak cold front that is dissipating over the central parts of the country. A new cold front has been announced for the evening and will reach the far north of Germany. Weather conditions should continue to change over the coming days, with light frost and fog expected in the early hours of the morning.

The weather data from Wetterfähren.de shows that the icy situation could ease for many regions in the morning, but drivers must expect possible dangers from freezing drizzle on Monday night. In southern Germany, frost temperatures down to -10 degrees are forecast for the day.

After these uncomfortable and dangerous days, improvement is in sight as a high pressure system moves in, which could bring milder weather. However, it remains to be seen whether the weather model predictions will be confirmed.
