New trainee dormitory in Bremen: affordable living space for 66 young talents!
Something is happening in the area of student accommodation in Bremen. On October 30, 2025, Bremen's first trainee dormitory was ceremoniously opened in the model district “Stadtleben Ellener Hof”. The official inauguration was a real occasion for celebration as it goes hand in hand with the aim of creating affordable housing for trainees in the city. As the District newspaper According to reports, the dormitory comprises a total of 54 apartments and thus provides 66 living spaces, all of which are now occupied.
At the inauguration, Bremen's Social Senator Claudia Schilling (SPD) made it clear how important such an institution is for the apprentice community. The construction work for the five-story building took around two years and was completed with a budget of 11 million euros. The state of Bremen provided an impressive 2.4 million euros from an investment cost grant.
Sustainable living
Another interesting aspect is the sustainable architectural style of the dormitory. Over 85 percent of the building was constructed of wood and is heated via district heating, which significantly reduces the facility's ecological footprint. The rent, which amounts to a maximum of 350 euros per person per month including additional costs, is another advantage for the trainees. This financial relief should not be neglected, especially since 80 percent of the places are allocated directly to trainees, while 20 percent are placed through companies.
“In order to meet the needs of the trainees, we not only offer apartments, but also social-educational support on site,” explains the Maribondo da Floresta Foundation, which is responsible for running the dormitory. The initiative is a joint project between the foundation and the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, which is also supported by funds from the European Social Fund ABiG highlights.
Application process and equal opportunities
But how do you get to enjoy one of these sought-after places to live? The application process is clearly structured. Interested trainees must be at least 18 years old, be in state-recognized dual or school training and have registered their training place in Bremen. A residence permit is also required. What is particularly exciting is that equal opportunities are guaranteed through a weighted lottery system in which places are distributed evenly between men and women. Half of the places are reserved for women and the same number for men.
The current status of the waiting lists shows that there is great demand despite places already being filled. Applicants can see their position on the waiting lists and have a better chance of getting a place if they are willing to move into a two-person apartment. The next lottery process is expected to take place at the beginning of 2026.
The “Stadtleben Ellener Hof” model neighborhood is more than just a dormitory. It offers space for a colorful mix of facilities such as a Hindu temple, social housing, a student dormitory and a daycare center. The vision of a small, urban village takes shape here, opening up a variety of possibilities for both residents and numerous visitors. The project includes a total of around 500 residential units on an area of almost ten hectares, which are created through 15 building plots and 50 plots of land District newspaper determines.
