Coach accident in Gifhorn: Six injured after tree collision!
A serious accident involving a coach occurred on July 12, 2025 in the Gifhorn district when the bus left the road on the B4 between Rötgesbüttel and Meine and collided with several trees. There were a total of 23 seniors on board the Dutch coach who were on their way to a hotel in Braunschweig. Tragically, six people were injured in this incident, including two seriously. The injured were immediately taken to surrounding hospitals, with the two seriously injured being transported by helicopter. NDR reports that the frontal damage to the bus was significant and its windshield was badly damaged.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bus driver appeared to have health problems, which led to the accident. The latest findings point to this assumption, while investigations into the exact cause of the accident are already underway. At the beginning, the initial reports said that 15 people were injured, but the number was put into perspective as medical treatment continued. The bus driver was also among the injured.
More accidents and traffic problems
The incident in Gifhorn is not the only one recently that highlights the dangers for seniors in road traffic. In the same week there was a similar accident involving a Flixbus in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, in which over 30 people were injured. Here a bus with 54 passengers and two drivers was involved in a serious accident. Such alarming incidents shed light on the challenges that older road users regularly face.
In 2023, 59.3% of fatally injured cyclists and pedestrians in Germany were at least 65 years old. This high risk arises from the vulnerable physical condition and the changed cognitive abilities with age. The Federal Ministry of Transport has therefore launched various initiatives to increase road safety for seniors, such as the German Road Safety Days. Here, older people can learn to better assess their abilities and act more safely in road traffic BMV.
While the situation is changing for older people when it comes to traffic noise, it is important to also raise awareness among the younger population. Consideration is essential to prevent accidents and maintain mobility in old age. The campaign “I feel young. I just need longer” is currently running, which aims to raise awareness among younger road users to act more carefully towards older people in traffic.
