Adventure on the Ems cycle path: Rinteln and the most beautiful stages!
Cycling is not just sport, but also an enjoyable way to explore new landscapes. This was proven by a tour group from Rinteln that set out on the Ems cycle path. Thilo, Uwe, Axel, Jörg, Michael, Stefan and Stephan made their way from Leer via Salzbergen, Rheine and Bad Oeynhausen to Rinteln. To get there, they took the train from Bückeburg to Rheine with a Lower Saxony ticket. But there were already problems on the train: a family without bikes blocked the bike compartment, and the barrier systems caused a delay of an hour, which endangered the connecting train to Leer.
Dinner in Leer was on the agenda, and the exciting question was raised: “Can you be full in Leer?” The first stage of the adventure led from Leer to Haren and stretched over around 85 km with 140 meters of elevation gain. On the way they visited the impressive Meyer Werft in Papenburg and learned from a guide that the greeting “Moin” has its origins in Low German.
Sights along the route
The stopover city of Papenburg, one of the oldest Fehn colonies in Germany, impressed not only with its Meyer shipyard, which today specializes in building cruise ships. The town of Haren also boasted a shipping museum that sheds light on the maritime history of the region. A lunch was planned in Haren before the trip continued to Salzbergen, where the group was surprised by numerous pig farms as well as inviting restaurants.
They experienced a special culinary moment in Lingen, where the famous “Kibbeling” – fish fillets in batter – came to the table. A historic fortress town, this city also offers attractions such as the 15th-century Old Town Hall and the Kreuzkirche, which once housed a university. Lingen's rich cultural heritage can be easily explored by bike, as the city can be easily reached on the Ems cycle path, which runs through several towns of tourist interest.
A successful end to the tour
Fortunately, the way back from Rheine to Bad Oeynhausen was on time. The tour ended on the Weser long-distance cycle path, including numerous refreshment stops in inns. The group's conclusion was consistently positive: The Ems cycle path not only offers good paths and beautiful locations, but also decent hotels for overnight stays. Along the Ems cycle path, next door to nature, peppered with attractions and a wide range of leisure activities - an insider tip for passionate cyclists who want to combine exploring the region with sporting activity.
The Ems cycle path route is well developed for cyclists from the source to the mouth and can be easily reached from the train stations in Emden, Leer, Papenburg and Bad Oeynhausen. If you still want to relax after the tour, you can treat yourself to a relaxing day on the island of Borkum, as many recommend. Everyone who travels on the Ems cycle path is offered a great experience here - be it in historic cities or while exploring the beautiful nature.
