Urgent sausage recall: Carcinogenic danger at Kaufland, Rewe, Penny!
A sausage recall is causing a stir in the Kaufland, Rewe and Penny supermarkets. The manufacturer Wingert Foods GmbH has recalled several ready meals that are contaminated with dangerous pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA). These substances can pose serious health risks, including liver damage and potential carcinogenic properties. Under no circumstances should you consume the affected products, warns az-online.de.

The increased concentration of pyrrolizidine alkaloids comes primarily from the spice marjoram used. These secondary plant ingredients can lead to severe poisoning at high doses, as the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) explains on [bfr.bund.de](https://www.bfr.bund.de/fragen-und- Answeren/thema/fragen-und- Answeren-zu-pyrrolizidinalkaloiden-in-lebensmittel/). It is known that consuming foods containing PA can cause liver damage or even acute poisoning.
The affected products should be returned to the point of purchase immediately. Customers can be sure that the purchase price will be refunded, even without a receipt. “I ask all consumers to be particularly careful and not to consume the products listed,” emphasizes the consumer advice center, which provides information about the risks of PA and its breakdown products in the liver. Consumers are called upon to handle food responsibly.
The BfR points out that acute PA-related poisonings have so far only been observed in isolated cases in Germany, but the risks from chronic ingestion are present in the long term. It is therefore particularly important to take health warnings seriously and take appropriate precautions.
