Cultural mill whispering: Low German stories come to life!

What could be nicer than spending the last Sunday of the month at the Seefelder Mühle? This cultural pearl offers a unique experience in which volunteer performers present stories from the mill's past in Low German and High German. Kreiszeitung reports that admission to these performances is free, but donations are welcome.

The program begins at 12 p.m. with a colorful group of actresses: the miller Rita Zucker, the cobbler's wife Waltraut Haffner, the hirer's wife Annelene Duhm, the spinner Bärbel König-Riesner and the baker's wife Sigrid Burmester appear. In the afternoon at 3 p.m. the same actresses can be seen again, with the sailor's wife Helga Baumbusch, who enriches the program.

Cultural mill experience

“Mill Whispers” – that is the title of this lively event, which takes place on the last Sunday of every month until the end of October. Jade-Touristik has interesting details: Visitors have the opportunity to hear stories about the mill and life in earlier times. The afternoon is also ideal for group bookings, be it for class reunions or family celebrations. And the mill café provides culinary accompaniment, where visitors can fortify themselves.

A special event on August 25th is also on the agenda. In addition to the actresses already mentioned, pharmacist Jutta Barghop, midwife Irmi Rüthemann and many other charismatic characters will also take the stage on this day.

Low German language in focus

Finally, the Plattdütsch Author Day will take place in the Botanical Garden on Sunday, August 29th. This event is all about Low German literature. From Heimatverband it appears that seven authors will present their latest works and hold readings here. A highlight is the Platt puppet theater, which will provide additional entertainment.

Admission to this literary event is also free, and the aim of these initiatives is to preserve and promote the Low German language. So it turns out: whether at “Mühlengehisper” or at Authors’ Day – interest in Low German stories and traditions is alive and enjoys great popularity.
