Wilhelmshaven: Dr. Angela Kirstges becomes the new council chairwoman!
A breath of fresh air in Wilhelmshaven: Dr. Angela Kirstges from Win@WBV took over as council chairwoman at the last council meeting. In a secret ballot, she was able to hold her own with 29 votes against Martin Burkhart from the “Gemeinsam Bunt” council group, who only received nine votes. The election became necessary after the previous chairman, Stefan Becker, had to resign due to illness. The decision for a secret vote was based on the AfD's wish, which in itself represents an exciting chapter in political events. The topic of secret elections has a long tradition in Germany and is not without controversy today. According to Wikipedia, this form of voting has been practiced for many decades, but has repeatedly been criticized.
The council meeting, which today brought an important sign of fickleness, also had an important topic on the agenda: the upcoming election of the mayor. The administration proposed to hold this election on September 13 in conjunction with the local elections. This could be a real advantage: not only would it bring cost savings, but it would also increase voter participation. The SPD clearly spoke out in favor of linking the elections, while the CDU supported Win@WBV's proposal to bring the OB election forward to May 3rd. Ultimately, however, the amendment failed to gain a majority and the council voted unanimously to go with the original date.
Voter behavior and political dynamics
According to surveys, the SPD is confronted with a weak chancellor and deficits in key issue areas. This has had a direct impact on voter behavior. A significant proportion of voters voted for the AfD out of deep-seated protest and because of the current refugee policy. In comparison, it becomes clear that the key points that will be discussed in the mayoral election in Wilhelmshaven have their own, local character.
With Angela Kirstges at the helm of the Council, a breath of fresh air and new perspectives could potentially creep into Council politics that go beyond simply holding elections. But as the saying goes? “Hope dies last!” The upcoming decisions will show how Wilhelmshaven will deal with the current challenges.
