Wolfsburg's football stars enjoy a break before the DFB Cup duel!

There will be some exciting news on August 12, 2025, a day full of anticipation in Wolfsburg football. VfL Wolfsburg is heading into the coming season with new momentum. The Dutch coach Paul Simonis was officially introduced as head coach and will lead the club's fortunes until at least June 30, 2027. Simonis, who previously led the Go Ahead Eagles to victory in the Dutch Cup and finished seventh in the Eredivisie, brings a breath of fresh air and new ideas to Lower Saxony.

His philosophy is based on more dominance, longer periods of possession and a high level of intensity in the game, which VfL fans are already following with excitement. However, the team was unable to convince in the last test matches and the Wolfsburg team only scored one goal in total. Doubts about the feasibility of this new style of play are certainly present among the fan base, as there are only a few weeks left until the Bundesliga title.

A new chapter

Simonis' previous coaching career dates back to 2005, when he began his career with the youth teams of Sparta Rotterdam. From assistant coach at Go Ahead Eagles to head coach, he has now arrived in Wolfsburg. The official introduction of his coaching team is expected at the beginning of July. It consists of the experienced companions Pascal Formann, Tristan Berghuis, Peter van der Veen and Martin Darneviel, who, together with Simonis, will take the team further forward.

The fact that Simonis has already won titles during his successful time with the Go Ahead Eagles - including the KNVB Cup 2024 - speaks for his abilities and the implementable concepts that he would like to bring to the Wolfsburg team. Sports director Peter Christiansen emphasizes that Simonis shares the necessary ideas and concepts to follow a successful path with VfL.

Free time of players

What do the VfL players actually do in the short time before the first competitive game? Vini Souza and Joakim Maehle relaxed in Berlin, while Patrick Wimmer and his wife captured their free time on Instagram in Munich. Kilian Fischer was also not idle and gave interesting insights into his life as a professional footballer as a guest on “At Broski – The Sport Show”. The players are taking advantage of the days off because after the cup game against Hemelingen on Saturday, the seriousness of life will begin again and the Bundesliga will also start shortly afterwards.

At a time when social media plays a major role, the Wolfsburg players show that they are also active beyond the pitch. For the Wolfsburg footballers, such opportunities to relax and unwind will be rare in the coming weeks. Whether Simonis' new game idea is already taking effect in the team remains to be seen and will probably be a question for the coming games.

The fan base remains optimistic - perhaps it is the new coach who can make Wolfsburg flourish? Time will tell whether the big sounds can also find the desired response in the Bundesliga.
