Bizarre volleys succumb to Schwerin: An emotional game in pink!
The Skurios Volleys from Borken had to admit defeat to the reigning German champions SSC Palmberg Schwerin in the Palmberg Arena on Wednesday evening. In front of more than 1,600 spectators, the game not only showed top sporting performances, but also commitment to a good cause, as it was part of the “Pink October” campaign, which draws attention to the importance of breast cancer prevention. The alliance supported the campaign with body tattoos in the form of a pink bow, which the players proudly wore.
However, the start of the encounter was anything but pleasant for the Borken girls. The first set clearly went to the hosts from Schwerin 25:15. Coach Danuta Brinkmann had reported good preparation, but the opponent surprised with an unexpected line-up. In the second set, however, the Skurios Volleys showed an improved game and were leading by four points. Despite this strong phase, the set ended again just in Schwerin's favor.
The course of the game and the emotions
In the third set the volleys held up well, but the Schwerin women also defended themselves here and prevailed in the crucial moments. The return of diagonal attacker Madleen Piest, who previously played in the Schwerin team, was particularly emotional. Her performance and that of the entire team led to Fabienne Coenders being awarded the first silver MVP medal of the season for her outstanding performance.
Despite the 3-0 defeat, Brinkmann drew a positive conclusion and emphasized the team's progress. “It was an intense week for us and we see that we are on the right track,” she said after the game. The next match will take place in Hamburg on Saturday and the team is determined to prove their skills there.
The organizational feat
The trip to Schwerin was a logistical challenge for the Skurios Volleys. The team left on Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. and only returned to Borken on Thursday night at 2:30 a.m. A big thank you went to the partners Buss Regenerative Projects and Dziambor Reisen, who supported the away trip. This first English week not only represented a test for the players, but was also a step towards establishing the team in the 1st Volleyball Bundesliga.
At the same time, the Volleyball Bundesliga continues to pursue exciting developments. The BERLIN RECYCLING Volleys won the 1st Bundesliga Men's League Cup for the fourth time in a row, which shows that the league operates at a high level of competition. Overall, the Skurios Volleys were not successful in Schwerin, but the learning process and the team's improving form give hope for an exciting season. Let's stay tuned to see how developments will develop in the next encounters!
