Bottrop's primary school students shine at the Sports Talent Day!
On November 5th, 2025, a very special event took place in the Dieter Renz Hall. Under the motto “Bottrop is looking for sports talent”, 91 enthusiastic primary school children who qualified as the best talents in their class in the previous school year gathered. The Sportif initiative's “Day of Talents” was a complete success, with a series of exercise stations that challenged all motor skills and demonstrated the children's sporting achievements. Marco Buchheit, deputy chairman of the Bottrop Sports Association, and Pia Grimm, swimming coach, honored the outstanding achievements of the young athletes.
The event offered young talents a platform to compete in various disciplines. Nine stations awaited the children: from sprinting to handball and soccer goal throws to a skill course and basketball basket throws. The little athletes were not only given the opportunity to show off their skills, but also learned a lot about the local sporting spirit. The Bottrop badminton community was on site with a mobile badminton net and a ball throwing machine, while the LC Adler Bottrop measured the sprint times with a light barrier.
Unique winners
The day was crowned with great results. In the overall ranking, a student from the Gregorschule and a student from the Johannesschule were able to take top places. The individual winners are Elisa from the Gregorschule, Ulfah from the Johannesschule and Marie from the Nikolaus-Groß-Schule, while the individual winners are Caspar (Johannesschule), Samed (Welheim primary school) and Elias (Fichteschule). All six winners were able to look forward to a medal, a certificate, a Sportif drinking bottle and a climbing voucher.
The stations were not only looked after by the young athletes, but also by trainers, athletes from LC Adler Bottrop and volunteers from the Josef-Albers-Gymnasium. This event helps to promote the city's talent and offer them a chance to further pursue their sporting ambitions.
Support for talent
The city of Bottrop shows great commitment to supporting talented athletes. As part of the “Competitive Sports in Bottrop” project, a total of 38 athletes received funding commitments for the 2025/2026 funding period on July 2, 2025. Mayor Bernd Tischler emphasized how important it is to support young athletes in various disciplines, especially in view of the successes they have already achieved. The rowers Johannes Benien and Tobias Strangemann, who recently won silver at the U23 World Championships in Canada, stand out as figureheads for the promotion of competitive sports in Bottrop. Judoka Ronja Buddenkotte, who won bronze at the U21 World Championships, was also honored.
The support will not go unnoticed in the coming years and the athletes currently supported. With significant successes and new support, Bottrop is gaining momentum and showing how much sporting talent can be found here. What is particularly pleasing is that hockey players were included in the support squad for the first time, which speaks for further diversification of the sports.
Overall, Bottrop's commitment to the young sports scene is a prime example of successful sports funding that not only promotes competitive athletes, but also popular sports. The cooperation between the city, sports associations and schools is a mainstay of this success and gives hope for a flourishing sporting future.
