New biomass power plant in Dortmund-Derne: the future of district heating!
A new biomass combined heat and power plant (CHP) will be built on the former Gneisenau mine site in Dortmund-Derne. Loud Ruhr24 This power plant is primarily intended to provide climate-friendly district heating and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, especially coal. The initiative is operated by Biowärme Dinslaken GmbH, which is known in the region for sustainable energy production.
The construction of the thermal power plant is necessary because the heat source from Deutsche Gasrußwerke will fail at the end of 2025, which could endanger the supply of around 8,000 households as well as schools and municipal facilities in the area. The new system will ensure a reliable and environmentally friendly heat supply in the future.
Useful information about the project
Covering an area of approximately 2.3 hectares, which is equivalent to about three football fields, the power plant will be built in the northeastern part of the former central workshop south of Derner Straße. The boiler house will be about 35 meters high, while the chimney stands out at 40 meters high, giving it the appearance of a 13-story skyscraper. Despite the size, the planners do not expect any significant odor emissions. However, occasionally short-term vapor plumes may occur in specific weather conditions.
Particular attention is paid to noise protection. Silencers and special foundations are intended to minimize noise emissions and ensure that the emission guidelines are adhered to. We in Dortmund also informs that the air quality is not expected to be noticeably impaired and that the air values are checked regularly to ensure that everything remains within the legal framework.
Citizen participation
Public participation is currently underway for anyone who would like to get involved in this process. From October 20th to November 17th, 2025, citizens are invited to submit written comments. These can be submitted to the city planning and building regulations office either by post, verbally for transcription or by email. The planning documents are available for inspection on the city website and can also be accessed directly there.
Construction of the new biomass cogeneration plant is expected to begin in 2027 after public participation has been completed and the comments have been examined. This means that Dortmund is at the beginning of an important step towards a more sustainable and climate-friendly energy supply.
