There was recently a crazy chase in Dortmund that was a real spectacle not only for those involved, but also for uninvolved spectators. Four young men sat in a car as they rushed through the city streets at breakneck speeds. According to WDR, the police received a report about the perpetrators and immediately did everything they could to stop the vehicle. But the driver refused to stop and accelerated to up to 200 km/h, turning the event into an adrenaline-charged race.
The officers activated several police vehicles and immediately placed a mat of nails on the road to end the pursuit. The getaway car went over the nail mat, which resulted in all of the tires going flat. While three passengers were arrested, the driver initially managed to escape. However, thanks to a helicopter mission, he was quickly found and also taken into custody. In addition to the driver's lack of a driver's license, it also turned out that he was under the influence of drugs.
Drug use in traffic
The problem of drug use on the roads is also a hot topic nationwide. According to Polizei-Beratung, participating in road traffic under the influence of illegal drugs such as cannabis or cocaine is not only an administrative offense, but in more serious cases can also lead to criminal consequences. If drug-related driving errors occur or endanger others, the driver could face prison sentences of up to five years. Such penalties can also be financially costly - fines of between 500 and 1,500 euros and a driving ban of up to three months are not uncommon.
The case in Dortmund sheds a bright light on this problem. Not only were traffic rules violated, but the lives of other road users were also put in danger. The driver is now being closely examined by the authorities. There have been similar incidents in the past, such as a chase in Berlin that ended in a crash - like in an action film. There, too, the driver ignored stop signals, raced through red lights and ultimately caused an accident, injuring several people. According to Tagesspiegel, such chases often degenerate into dangerous scenarios.
The investigation in Dortmund is now ongoing and it is being examined how such unscrupulous negligence could have occurred. It is to be hoped that such risky journeys do not become the norm and that safety on our roads remains our top priority.
