Rheinische Straße in Dortmund: closures and diversions from July 7th!
From July 7th to July 20th, 2025, drivers in Dortmund must expect a major diversion. Rheinische Straße, between Ostermannstraße and Ofenstraße, will be completely closed in both directions. The reason for this is necessary renovation work on the light rail tracks, which is being carried out by DSW21, the Dortmund local transport company. Drivers cannot turn onto Huckarder Straße during this time. So it's time to make a plan to get around the lockdown!
Two main diversions have been put in place for traffic. The first leads via Unionstrasse, Sunderweg, Mallinckrodtstrasse, Huckarder Strasse and finally to Dorstfelder Allee. The second diversion runs via Ofenstrasse and Huckarder Strasse before it also flows into Dorstfelder Allee. DSW21 asks all road users to understand the diversions and the resulting inconveniences.
Bus routes affected
Three bus routes will also be affected by this work, namely the 453, NE5 and NE6, which will be rerouted during the closure. The U43 and U44 light rail lines, on the other hand, are spared from the major restrictions, which is positive news for many commuters. This means you can continue to travel without any significant changes. DSW21 has emphasized that light rail service will not be affected.
There is little anticipation about the road work, but it is necessary to sustainably improve the infrastructure in Dortmund. As part of a broader mobility transition, which also includes projects by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), this measure aims to make local public transport more attractive in the long term. With innovative concepts and a focus on less motorized individual transport, the quality of life in the city should increase so that more people switch to public transport.
Focus on mobility transition
In order to achieve the goal of the mobility transition, cities like Dortmund must also rely on innovative road and traffic planning. It is important to create an infrastructure that promotes short distances and alternative means of transport. The focus is on concepts such as pedestrian zones, continuous cycle paths and the use of electrically powered vehicles. It is important that politicians know what is possible on site in order to implement the measures in the best possible way. The need for reliable data should not be underestimated.
In summary, it shows that the city of Dortmund is dealing with the traffic problem not only in the present, but also in the future. The upcoming work on Rheinische Straße is a step in the right direction for sustainable transport development, from which all citizens can ultimately benefit. Further road work on Märkische Straße is already being planned and will begin in August. So, keep the paths clear and have a safe trip!
