The Jan Wellem monument now lights up in a modern and energy-efficient way!
The “Jan Wellem” equestrian monument, one of Düsseldorf’s most impressive landmarks, has been shining in a new light since January 22, 2026. The magnificent historic lanterns that have framed the monument for 100 years were extensively restored by Netzgesellschaft Düsseldorf. This measure fits perfectly into the city's strategy of sustainable energy saving.
Mayor Dr. is particularly proud. Stephan Keller on the successful combination of tradition and state-of-the-art technology. The old sodium vapor lamp technology was replaced by energy-saving LED technology, which ultimately led to an enormous reduction in annual consumption: from 4,350 to 1,240 kilowatt hours - that means a saving of around 72 percent. Energy consumption is thus significantly reduced, which represents a big step towards sustainable urban development.
Restoration and craftsmanship
The restoration itself was a true masterpiece, as each of the four lamps was individually made and required special expertise and craftsmanship. One of the lights suffered badly in a shunting accident, which made extensive renovation necessary. All bodies were reworked, repainted and decorated with artistic gold leaf applications by experienced craftsmen. The masts also received a new coat of paint in stylish basalt gray.
Netzgesellschaft Düsseldorf mbH, which is responsible for the planning, operation and production of electricity, gas, water and district heating networks, played a central role in this project. Their extensive range of services not only ensures a smooth energy supply, but also the integration of modern technologies into the historic cityscape. The company operates under strict conditions of economic efficiency and legal regulation, which guarantees reliable and high-quality care for citizens. Converting the city's lighting systems to 100 percent LED technology by the end of 2026 is part of the city's comprehensive sustainability strategy.
A piece of history
Thanks to such modern interventions, the equestrian monument itself, created by the court sculptor Gabriel Grupello and erected in 1711, remains not only an urban landmark, but also a living part of Düsseldorf's history. The combination of historical aesthetics and advanced technology sets an example for the future of the city and shows that tradition and innovation can go together.
With the renovation and modernization of the lanterns at the Jan Wellem Monument, Düsseldorf has opened another chapter in its city history that both honors the past and sets the course for a sustainable future. Anyone who visits the monument now can not only admire the changed lighting, but also experience the successful symbiosis of old and new up close.
