Wolfgang Rolshoven: Josef Neuberger Medal for his work against anti-Semitism

Wolfgang Rolshoven, who has been working on a voluntary basis as anti-Semitism officer for the state capital Düsseldorf since July 1, 2025, was awarded the renowned Josef Neuberger Medal by the Jewish Community of Düsseldorf on October 30, 2025. The award ceremony took place in the community's festively decorated synagogue, at which North Rhine-Westphalia's Deputy Prime Minister Mona Neubauer gave the laudation. Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller particularly praised Rolshoven's commitment to Jewish life and his tireless fight against anti-Semitism.

The Josef Neuberger Medal has been awarded since 1991 to individuals and organizations who have made outstanding contributions to the Jewish community and kept the memory of the crimes of National Socialism alive. This medal is named after Josef Neuberger, a Jewish lawyer and former Minister of Justice of North Rhine-Westphalia. Previous winners include greats such as Johannes Rau, Angela Merkel and the band “Die Toten Hosen”. Last year Armin Laschet received the medal for his commitment. This award therefore has a high tradition and honor.

In his acceptance speech, Rolshoven himself expressed concern about the increase in anti-Semitic incidents in Germany, especially since October 7, 2023. The anti-Semitism commissioner emphasized the responsibility that every individual in society has to decisively counter anti-Semitism. Protecting Jewish citizens and their institutions is not only a social but also a political responsibility. In recent years, both the federal and state governments have taken numerous measures to combat anti-Semitism and increase the security of the Jewish community. For example, the National Strategy against Anti-Semitism and for Jewish Life was adopted, which sets a clear signature of our times.

This strategy aims to strengthen Jews in Germany and make the realities of their lives visible. This includes, among other things, increased legal punishment for anti-Semitic crimes and the promotion of projects that combat anti-Semitism. “Live democracy!” is one such program that has been supporting measures against anti-Semitism since 2015. According to information from the federal government, research on the subject of anti-Semitism will also be funded with around 12 million euros until 2025.

In summary, Wolfgang Rolshoven's efforts show that the issue of anti-Semitism in Germany is more relevant than ever and continues to be a high priority. His commitment is valued not only in Düsseldorf but throughout the country and is a valuable contribution to strengthening Jewish life and combating anti-Semitism. “We all have to stand together and be decisive and clear in our actions,” concluded Rolshoven.

The Josef Neuberger Medal remains a sign of gratitude and recognition for outstanding personalities who work tirelessly for a better future. The Jewish Community of Düsseldorf and the committed people who work on their behalf are an important part of this valuable development.
