Traffic disaster in North Rhine-Westphalia: A3 and A40 closed for years!
The traffic chaos on the A3 in front of the Kaiserberg intersection in Duisburg is currently taking on worrying proportions. Imminent construction work will lead to extensive full closures in both directions, which will last until mid-2027. This was done by WA reported. Successful commuters and travelers will have to prepare for longer journey times and complicated detours while the local infrastructure is extensively modernized.
At the start of this series of construction sites, the A3 will be completely closed for ten days in November. Strictly speaking, this will happen from November 7th to 17th between the Oberhausen-West and Breitscheid motorway junctions. This work is necessary because connecting bridges have to be demolished. The traffic flows on the A40, which will also be completely closed on an October weekend for demolition work on a disused bridge structure, are contributing to the general uncertainty.
Long-term effects of construction work
The construction work, which began in December 2022, will last an estimated eight years. From October 29th there will be further closures of the connecting ramps between the A3 in the direction of Cologne and the A40 in the direction of Venlo and Essen, which will last until the work is completed in 2027 BBV.
The closures are not only annoying, but also crucial for improving overall traffic management. Not only will bridges and lanes be rebuilt, noise protection will also be expanded. The authorities are thus reacting to the persistently high traffic flows, which have increased again in 2023, as the current data from the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMV) shows - comprehensively documented in the annual compendium "Traffic in Numbers" BMV.
What does this mean for commuters?
Commuters who rely on the A3 every day are particularly affected by these measures. This will also involve diversions, which will be carefully signposted in order to minimize traffic jams and delays as much as possible. However, it is feared that the long waiting times and detours will get on the nerves of drivers. According to plans, the first completed section of the A3 is scheduled to be reopened to traffic in summer 2026.
Overall, it is to be hoped that the construction work will go quickly and well, so that commuters will soon be back on their usual terrain. Until then, it's time to stay strong and keep your nerve.
