BVB triumphs in the penalty shootout: Frankfurt out, Dortmund through!
An exciting duel in the DFB Cup caused football fever in Germany on October 28th. Borussia Dortmund beat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-2 after a thrilling penalty shootout and thus moved into the round of 16. The game ended 1-1 after regular 90 minutes and an additional extra time, with the game played in front of 59,300 spectators.
Ansgar Knauff gave the Hessians a 1-0 lead in the 7th minute. A wing attack from Mario Götze found its way to Knauff, who finished coldly. But Dortmund didn't give up and equalized shortly after half-time in the 48th minute through Julian Brandt, who used an excellent pass from Julian Ryerson. This even game offered exciting scenes, with BVB increasing the pressure after the equalizer.
The penalty shootout as a decision
The decisive moment came in the penalty shootout. All of Dortmund's shooters converted their penalties confidently, while Eintracht Frankfurt had to swallow a bitter pill. Ritsu Doan put his shot over the goal and Fares Chaibi was denied by Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel, making him a celebrated hero. Dortmund successfully made it to the round of 16, while Frankfurt was able to regain hope after a drought of five games without a win, having recently scored a 2-0 win against FC St. Pauli.
The tactical formation of Frankfurt coach Dino Toppmöller, who relied on a three-man chain and substituted fresh players, was initially promising, but could not bring the desired victory. Niko Kovac, on the other hand, made some changes to Dortmund's starting XI after they won against 1. FC Köln. Among other things, Anselmino was new to the first eleven, while Bensebaini had to take a break due to back problems.
More cup duels
It wasn't just Dortmund and Frankfurt that were the focus of the DFB Cup. VfL Wolfsburg also found themselves in a heartbreak-inducing encounter. They lost 1-0 to second division club Holstein Kiel in their own stadium. Alexander Bernhardsson scored the decisive goal with a penalty kick in the 42nd minute. Wolfsburg's Jenson Seelt received a yellow-red card in the 36th minute and had to leave the pitch. Holstein Kiel had a few chances beforehand, with Wolfsburg's best opportunity in the 85th minute going unused.
Another exciting game took place at Hamburger SV, who triumphed 1-0 at 1. FC Heidenheim - Robert Glatzel also scored with a penalty kick. Heidenheim's Tim Siersleben had to leave the field in the 44th minute due to an emergency stop. Speaking of goals: Hertha BSC celebrated a clear 3-0 win against SV Elversberg, where Michael Cuisance, Sebastian Grönning and Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson were the top scorers. Nine minutes before the end, Lukas Pinckert from Elversberg was shown the red card for another emergency stop.
The next league highlights are already coming up for Frankfurt and Dortmund, with Frankfurt playing against Heidenheim on Saturday and Dortmund playing against FC Augsburg on Friday. The anticipation for the upcoming games is palpable!
