Drama in Euskirchen: Son threatens parents with knife – psychological crisis!

A dramatic incident took place in Euskirchen in February 2023, which is now being heard before the Bonn regional court. A 39-year-old man suffering from mental health problems tried to threaten his parents with a kitchen knife. Again Cologne City Gazette Reportedly, he had been under a lot of stress in the previous period. He lived in an apartment that was infested with mold and had financial difficulties because the job center didn't transfer any money to him.

On February 19, the man rang his parents' doorbell at around 9:30 a.m. and demanded money. This led to an altercation with his mother, who suffered cuts when she tried to take the knife from him. The father offered him 100 euros in the hope of calming him down. But the situation continued to escalate and the parents were forced to flee to their bedroom and close the door.

A rescue attempt

The man's brother, who was present at the incident, intervened and was able to disarm the attacker with a broomstick. He held him on the ground until the police arrived. The accused stated that he needed the money for furniture for a new apartment, but in reality it only existed in his imagination. He had previously had delusions and pretended to be a member of a ruling family from Qatar.

In 2024, the man was admitted to the psychiatric ward of Marien Hospital Euskirchen due to his psychological problems. He stayed there voluntarily, but at some point stopped taking his medication. He is currently receiving medication treatment again in a clinic in Düsseldorf.

Legal consequences and the role of the family

The procedure for permanent placement in a psychiatric facility is now pending at the Bonn Regional Court, and the next hearing is scheduled for August 22nd. According to the legal provisions on accommodation, both the compulsory admission to psychiatric hospitals and the penal system for people with mental illnesses are well regulated. Section 63 of the Criminal Code stipulates that placement in a psychiatric hospital can take place if the person concerned is expected to commit serious illegal acts.

Although the incidents were challenging for the family, his parents and brother still support the 39-year-old. It is hoped that the courts' upcoming decisions and further treatment can help him overcome his challenges.

The issue of forced accommodation is a much-discussed topic in Germany. The legal basis for this is anchored in the Criminal Code and the corresponding state laws. The reasons for such placement can be varied, in particular the risk to one's own or others' legal interests in the event of serious mental illness. In these cases, detention is often ordered by a court order, even if there is acute danger.

Responsibility, both for those affected and for society, remains at the center of the discussion about how to deal with mentally ill people and their right to treatment and protection.
