Positive balance: Police promote visibility in road traffic
In the dark season, visibility is the be-all and end-all in traffic. The police in the Euskirchen district took this principle to heart and carried out an informative operation last week. Under the motto “Visibility in the dark season”, checks were carried out at various locations to ensure that pedestrians and cyclists were complying with the relevant safety measures. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of lighting and reflective clothing. The officers distributed numerous reflective tapes, vests and pendants to increase safety. Attention was also paid to checking the bicycles: Of the 42 two-wheelers inspected, only one had no functioning lighting, which is a positive result Radio Euskirchen.
But despite this positive response, it was noticed that several bicycles were missing bells and reflectors. Bicycle helmets were also in short supply in many places. It was also noticeable that e-scooter riders often rode without helmets and on sidewalks, which is strictly speaking not allowed. There is still a lot of potential for improvement here so that all road users can travel safely.
Essential lighting for cyclists
Proper lighting will be particularly important for cyclists in the coming months. The ADAC therefore tested 21 bicycle lamps to determine the best models for autumn and winter. Two lighting levels were evaluated: 30 lux, ideal for city traffic, and 100 lux, which is recommended for unlit paths. There were pleasing results for the 30 lux lamps: two models performed “good”, while seven were classified as “satisfactory”. A set from Fischer became the test winner because it can offer both a reliable rear light and a long running time ADAC.
On the other hand, there were also less positive reports. The Decathlon model didn't even reach the minimum lighting time of five hours and thus took last place. For the 100 lux lamps, the front light from Trelock received the rating “good”, while the model from Lupine is considered poor due to poor light distribution and glare. This test shows that high lux and lumen values are not always meaningful; the actual light distribution is crucial for safety ADAC.
A ray of hope for security
In summary, it appears that the police campaign in the Euskirchen district and the results of the ADAC test shed a positive light on the importance of visibility in road traffic. This coming winter, cyclists should pay particular attention to their lighting, while e-scooter riders are asked to observe applicable traffic regulations. We wish everyone that they get through the dark season safely.
