Barbecue ban in North Rhine-Westphalia threatens: heat causes fire warnings!

The anticipation of warm summer evenings with the smell of barbecue in the air could soon be dashed. An alarming forecast from the German Weather Service (DWD) indicates an impending ban on barbecues in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). How calf reported, strict regulations are already in force in some municipalities. The current high temperatures and the associated drought have drastically increased the risk of fire in recent weeks.

A central reason for the restrictions is the Grassland Fire Index (GLFI), which provides information about the risk of grassland fires in five danger levels. If the values are above level 4, there is a risk of barbecue bans in public parks and meadows in many cities. While grilling in your own garden, on the terrace or balcony remains permitted, enjoying a barbecue in the countryside is becoming increasingly difficult.

Threat factors for barbecue bans

Loud ruhr24.de We are experiencing the driest spring since 1881 in North Rhine-Westphalia, which means the risk of forest fires is increasing every day. A week-long barbecue ban is looming, particularly in cities such as Duisburg, Gelsenkirchen, Leverkusen and Moers. A general smoking ban in forests is already in effect from March 1st to October 31st. The situation here can look quite bleak for barbecue fans.

The DWD updates the maps showing the current grassland fire index every day. The following applies: From level 4 onwards, grilling in public spaces is prohibited. This not only applies to public parks, but also special barbecue areas. Cities are now including emergency clauses in municipal ordinances and further restricting barbecue enjoyment.

Administrative offenses and fines

Anyone who still sticks to the grill should be aware that violations will be punished by the regulatory authorities. In Cologne, fines of up to 25 euros can be imposed for illegal grilling, while in other cities the fines can vary. In Münster, for example, the amount is a modest 5 euros, in Dortmund it is 20 euros and in Bonn it is even 50 euros. This shows how seriously the situation is being taken.

When grilling in your own home, you must expressly be considerate of your neighbors and follow the specific house rules. Many apartments have clauses that prohibit the use of charcoal grills on balconies. Electric and gas grills are often easier. Especially after the current weather conditions, we advise you to check the circumstances carefully so as not to get into legal difficulties.

If you grill too much, neighbors could also complain. It is therefore advisable to perhaps invite roommates to the next barbecue party in order to avoid any disagreements. Ultimately, we can only hope that the weather will improve soon and that the DWD can deliver the good news of lower temperatures so that the barbecue fun can continue!

For all published regulations and information, you should regularly take a look at the daily updates from the DWD. This means you are on the safe side and can continue to enjoy grilling for as long as the situation allows.
